IIRC, the M16/M4 require blank adapters due to the lack of gas pressure put out by the blanks. Essentially, they are too weak to cause the rifle to cycle properly which results in jams. The blank adapter closes the end of the barrel which a) provides enough "back pressure" for the gas port system to cycle the bolt properly, and b) keeps anything from coming out of the end of the barrel, just in case.
I am sure that my terminology is not spot on, but I think I got the gist of it correct.

My thoughts too.
Blanks don't represent issues for your rifle UNLESS they are for older cartridges that have corrosive primers (like Czech 7.62x54mmR) - then you need to clean the barrel shortly after use or risk rust issues. You also have to remember that when fired, blanks still emit powder particles and other debris (especially those with the wooden bullets), at a velocity that if unhindered by a muzzle device, can cause harm to persons or other materials (i.e. windows, walls, TVs, etc.)
The muzzle devices are required for most firearms in order to ensure that adequate functioning occurs. If you are using a non-semi-auto, then you can usually shoot them until you get bored (and then you get to clean your bore really well :) ). If a semi-auto, then you need to find an adapter specific to your firearm and the blank ammo. What type of firearm (and caliber) are you planning on using them in?
